Assessment & Exemption Deadlines

Under New York State law, any deadline that falls on a holiday or weekend is extended until the next business day. For example, the deadline for publishing the final assessment roll in Freeport is January 1st. That's always a holiday, so the actual deadline for publication of the final assessment roll is usually January 2nd. However, in 2010 January 1 is a Friday, so the next business day is Monday, January 4 and that's the 2010 deadline for publishing the final assessment roll for the Village of Freeport.

Here are some important dates for assessments and exemptions in the Village of Freeport. The assessment calendar for the Nassau County Department of Assessment is different. Please call 516-571-1500 for information.

  • January 1: each year, the final village assessment roll is published on January 1. It serves as the basis for your Village Tax Bill which is due between March 1 and March 31.
  • January 31: The last day for filing a Small Claims Assessment Review case with the Nassau County Clerk.
  • July: For those property tax exemptions that must be renewed each year, the Assessor's office mails renewal applications during the month of July. If you expect to receive a renewal application and have not received it by August 1st, please call the Assessor's office at 516-377-2256 and request one.
  • September 1 – September 30: Second-half Village of Freeport tax bills are due and payable without penalty at this time.
  • October 1: All new or renewal applications for property tax exemptions must be received in the Assessor's Office by October 1. They must be physically present in the Assessor's Office by 4:30 p.m. on October 1. A postmark won't do. Any application received after that time will be denied.
  • October 1: Also taxable status date. Property values depend on what's on the property on that date. If, for example, you demolish your garage on September 20, make sure the Assessor knows about it to make the necessary change. If you demolish your garage on October 2, the change won't be reflected in your assessment until the following year or in your tax bill for 17 months.
  • November 1: This is the date the tentative assessment roll is published. If we've changed your assessment, we will mail you a notice, but you are also welcomed to stop by Village Hall and look at the assessment roll yourself. If you disagree with your assessment you may file a formal grievance in the Assessor's Office between November 1 and 8:00 PM on the third Tuesday in November. As with exemption applications, the application must be physically present in the Assessor's Office by the deadline. An application postmarked by the deadline which arrives later does not meet the filing requirement. Neither does one that's dropped in the Village Hall mail slot after 8 p.m. on the third Tuesday in November.
  • December 31: If you filed a grievance in November, the Assessor's Office will mail you a notice of the Board of Review's determination by this date. If you received a reduction, it will be shown on the final assessment roll. If you wish to appeal the decision, you may file a Small Claims Assessment Review case in the Nassau County Clerk's Office. You can do that yourself, designate someone else to do it for you, or hire a firm that specializes in assessment protests. The choice is yours.
