Burglary Prevention Tips From Freeport Chief Michael Woodward
Report suspicious or unusual persons, autos or circumstances you observe in your neighborhood to police.
Check window and door locks to make sure that they are in good working order. Keep them secured.
Secure basement windows along with wall or window air conditioners.
Remove any outdoor item that provides hiding spaces, conceals your house or could be used to gain entry.
Illuminate the outside of your house. If possible, use motion detector-activated lights.
If your house has a security alarm, set it when leaving or going to bed.
If you car has an alarm system, set the alarm at night and keep the remote by your bed. If you hear any suspicious noise inside or outside your house, trigger the car alarm and call police.
Inventory and record the serial numbers or specific identifiers of household electronics and other valuables. Keep a copy of the list and photographs of the items in a safe location.
When going away for a protracted period, arrange for a caretaker (preferably a neighbor) to watch your house while you're gone. Provide the caretaker with the contact information for you as well as anyone you have entrusted with your house key in the event a problem arises. Discontinue deliveries and set lights on timers.
When leaving or returning to your house, be observant of vehicles and people who are suspicious. If you feel you are being followed, bypass your house and call police. Provide the police with as much information as possible regarding the description of the suspicious person or vehicle.
(See links below for description guides)
As a deterrent to driveway robberies and home invasions, vary your schedule and route routine.
If you arrive home and find any indication that your house may have been burglarized, DO NOT ENTER THE HOME and PROMPTLY CALL 911.
